Meet the Speaker: Edward Crystal
BVSc CertAVP MRCVS
Referral Surgeon
Following graduation from the University of Liverpool Ed started his veterinary career at a varied, busy small animal practice in Maidenhead, Berkshire. After eighteen months of general practice Ed undertook a rotating internship at ChesterGates Veterinary Specialists followed by returning to the University of Liverpool’s Small Animal Teaching Hospital to first take on a one-year internship in small animal orthopaedics before starting a residency in small animal surgery.
Ed’s residency involved all aspects of surgery, with a high case load of patients with cruciate disease, fractures, hip dysplasia, unstable joints, all sorts of neoplasms, extra-hepatic porto-systemic shunts, thoracic problems, ear disease and much more. Ed completed his residency in 2023 and has since been working as a clinician in orthopaedics and soft tissue surgery at Northwest Veterinary Specialists in Cheshire since where he continues to see a wide variety of clinical cases with many emergency cases.
Ed is happy to see all manner of surgical cases, but has intertest in fracture management, assessment and treatment of joint disease, emergency surgery and oncological surgery. Having worked within a university set up for several years, Ed is keen on teaching and has experience in both lecturing and small group and individual teaching. He is especially enthusiastic when discussing biomechanics and the evidence behind joint disease surgery.
Outside of work, Ed enjoys exploring the Wirral countryside with his Border Terrier, Macey. He’s also interested in music, football, literature and history and would be more than happy to bore anyone discussing his favourite castles or what he considers the best pop-punk albums!
